April 15, 2015 – Letter from Majlis Ashura’s President Dr. Abdelhafid DJemil to the Muslim Community
April 15, 2015 Jumada A-Akhira 26, 1436
Dear Imams, Community Leaders, Brothers and Sisters, Muslim New Yorkers:
Assalamu Alaykum wa Rahmatul Allah wa Barakatuh. Praise to Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. I bear witness that there is no god except Allah, and I bear witness that Mohammed is His servant and Messenger.
I have the honor to be the President of the Majlis Ash-Shura. In this context, I serve the Muslim community and the general society. It is the plan of Allah Subahanahu Wa Ta’ala that we gather from different places and diverse ethnicities in New York to work together. Each of us has a role in the betterment of the society, and each is to fulfill that role.
Majlis Ash-Shura is the oldest Muslim umbrella organization of Masjids in New York City. It has been representing the Muslim community and leading the struggle for the religious and civil rights since 1989. The Majlis has become the main voice of the Muslim community in New York with its diverse membership of Masjids, organizations, and institutions. Read more
March 15, 2015 – ISTALLATION OF A NEW EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE FOR THE MAJLIS ASH-SHURA (ISLAMIC LEADERSHIP COUNCIL) OF METROPOLITAN NEW YORK
The Majlis Ashura (Islamic Leadership Council) of Metropolitan New York is pleased to announce to our constituents, the Muslim community of Greater New York and our partners, the installation of our newly elected Executive Committee Sunday March 15, 2015 at Majsid Taqwa in Brooklyn. Please, welcome our Executive Committee that consists of:
President: Dr. Abdelhafid Djemil; Vice President (1): Dr. Muhammad Yousufuddin; Vice President (2): Imam Siraj Wahhaj; Treasurer: Imam Abdul Azeem Khan; Secretary General: Br. Ahmed Taha; Board Member (1): Br. Naji Almontaser; Board Member (2): Br. Mir Massum Ali.
We pray to Almighty Allah that He accepts the excellent good deeds and services of the outgoing Executive Committee, and bless the new Executive Committee, grant it strength and give it support. Ameen.
The Islamic Leadership Council (Majlis Ash-shura) of Metropolitan New York thanks (almighty God) Allah for this latest affirmation of the will and hope of Muslim New Yorkers, who continue during difficult times to claim our place in American Society, by demanding equal rights and recognition for our faith community. Twenty two years ago Mayor David Dinkins backed by the city council of that time, signed into law an amendment adding the Muslim holiday days of Eidul-fitr and Eid-Adha to those Christian and Jewish holy days upon which alternate side parking is suspended. This was the first step in a quest for inclusion on an even more important level, and the Majlis Ash-shura worked hard to make the dream a reality. The continued commitment of the office of the mayor, and the city council of this time to an equitable inclusive society, is now evidenced anew by the establishment of days of observation for the same two Muslim holy days on the New York City Department of Education calendar. Our Children and all New Yorkers are the victors in this long struggle. We are grateful for all who worked with us in producing a more fair and equitable society for us all to live in as diverse neighbors.

In light of the announcement made yesterday regarding the arrest of three young Muslims charged with attempt and conspiracy to provide material support for ISIL, and today’s 22nd memorial anniversary of the bombing of the World Trade Center, the Majlis Ash-Shura (Islamic Leadership Council) re-affirms our commitment to public safety for all New Yorkers.
At the same time we remind all that in America there is a presumption of innocence until proved guilty for all people charged with crimes. In the past informants have been used by law enforcement agencies on both the city and federal level to entrap vulnerable individuals from the Muslim community. Read more.
February 27, 2015 – Why Does the FBI Have to Manufacture Its Own Plots if Terrorism and ISIS Are Such Grave Threats?
The FBI and major media outlets yesterday trumpeted the agency’s latest counter-terrorism triumph: the arrest of three Brooklyn men, ages 19 to 30, on charges of conspiring to travel to Syria to fight for ISIS (photo of joint FBI/NYPD press conference, above). As my colleague Murtaza Hussain ably documents, “it appears that none of the three men was in any condition to travel or support the Islamic State, without help from the FBI informant.” One of the frightening terrorist villains told the FBI informant that, beyond having no money, he had encountered a significant problem in following through on the FBI’s plot: his mom had taken away his passport. Noting the bizarre and unhinged ranting of one of the suspects, Hussain noted on Twitter that this case “sounds like another victory for the FBI over the mentally ill.” Read more.
